The Straight Girl’s Guide to Sleeping with Chicks by Jen Sincero

Maybe I should preface this with a disclaimer: I’ve written two papers and a presentation about this book. I’ve had to read it way too many times, and analyze the crap out of it. So maybe I’m a little jaded.
Anyway, I really hate this book. It’s supposed to be a sex positive guide for women who want to experiment with other women, but still see themselves as “straight”. However, it ends up sounding like a teen magazine’s article on how to do it. Sincero uses terms like “panty hamster”, which is amusing, but a tad immature. She also advocates getting your friends drunk to have sex with them. This can seem like a good idea at first, but it ends up being really manipulative. Sincero also includes a chapter about going back to “Boyville” once you’ve exhausted the lesbian within you. Oh, and anyone interested in sex and sexuality research would probably like to know that Sincero reduces all previous research on sex to “labels aren’t for me”.
On a positive note, here’s a nice list of sex stores, websites, and videos in the back, but the rest of the book is sugary, trite, and unintelligent. Fortunately, I never have to read this book again if I don’t want to. And I don’t want to.
Note: this IS a good book to read if you want to get really mad and start yelling at your friends about sex and empowerment.
